Restaurateur Kevin Aoki has traveled worldwide while opening numerous restaurant concepts, and wherever he goes, he constantly samples the local cuisine and makes friends along the way. With 1938 Indochine, he intended to bring that same feeling and the exotic flavors of Southeast Asia’s famous street food culture to a restaurant right here in Kaka’ako. When guests enter the restaurant and experience the curated décor, which he personally hand-selected and shipped back to Hawaii, they will feel as if they have time-traveled to another era.
Southeast Asia Meets French Indochina in Kaka’ako
1938 Indochine brings the vibrant street culture of Southeast Asia to the heart of Kaka’ako. The expansive 6,000 square foot space evokes the energy of the bustling Southeast Asia street scene. Antique motorbikes rest on black iron shelves above a dramatic marble bar and communtal table, while vintage wooden furnishings, intimate banquettes, fountains, birdcages, and flowing red silk curtains create an atmosprhere of timeless elegance.
Outside guests can unwind on the lively lanai, where cigar smoking is welcomed in a designated area with our curated cigar menu. Upstairs, a hidden speakeasy offers an intimate escape with handcrafted cocktails and a sophisticated late night atmosphere – all in the heart of Kaka’ako.
