Welcome to 1938 Indochine.

Decadent French Colonial vibe mixed with the hustle and bustle of a Vietnam Street scene.

Restaurateur Kevin Aoki has traveled worldwide while opening numerous restaurant concepts, and wherever he goes, he constantly samples the local cuisine and makes friends along the way. With 1938 Indochine, he intended to bring that same feeling and the exotic flavors of Southeast Asia’s famous street food culture to Honolulu. When guests enter the restaurant and experience the curated décor, which he personally hand-selected and shipped back to Hawaii, they will feel as if they have time-traveled to another era.

This is 1938 Indochine

Southeast Asian with French flare

Heavily influenced by the period known as “French Indochina,” the talented team in the heart of the restaurant, the kitchen, start their food preparation early in the morning. They combine time-honored recipes from Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand, alongside unique Asian ingredients to recreate dishes that capture that authentic street style cuisine originated by the food vendors of Southeast Asia.

Transporting you to Southeast Asia

The interior of the cavernous 6,000 square foot space replicates the hustle and bustle of a busy Vietnam Street scene. Unique features include antique motorbikes perched in black iron shelves high above a massive marble bar and communal table. French flare is found in the vintage wooden tables, cozy banquettes, water fountain features, birdcages, and red silk curtains which float from the second-floor balcony.

Gift Cards

Give the Gift of Aoki

The motto, “Make good friends through great food,” was coined by Kevin Aoki’s Grandfather, Yunosuke Aoki, the first in the Aoki family to open a restaurant. A great way to do this is by giving an Aoki Group gift card to friends, family, and colleagues. They are easy to purchase either online or in any participating restaurant and redeemable at most Aoki Group restaurants or cafes in the United States.
